1931年，肯塔基州海蓝县（Harlan county， Kentucky)的煤矿工人进行了罢工。武装到牙齿的公司私人保安在矿区中到处横行制造恐怖事件，寻找工会领导，殴打，监禁，屠杀无所不用其极。但是一无所有的煤矿工人们团结起来，依靠工会组织在肯塔基州同矿主们和背后支持的美国政府进行了针锋相对的武装斗争。这个事件发展到后来，工人也拿起了武器，双方拿枪互射。最终是美国的国民自卫队甚至出动了飞机轰炸工人。这段历史被称为“海蓝血腥事件”（Bloody Harlan）。

《Which Side Are You On?》的作者是Florence Reece，一个矿工工会组织者的妻子。在1931年她的家被搜查之后，当晚她在厨房里的挂历上写下了这首歌的歌词，又从传统民谣中选取了旋律。1973年这首歌被公开演唱。

今天，在依然号称社会主义的中国，劳动群众正进行着同样的斗争。镇压、抓捕和监禁也在拷问着每一个劳动者和有良知的人：你站哪一边？
